Zelestra, EDP expand Spain battery portfolio beyond 1 GWh
Zelestra and EDP have signed two power purchase agreements to add approximately 462 MWh of battery energy storage to 181 MWdc of operational solar capacity in Spain, taking their hybrid portfolio beyond 1 GWh.
At Pedroso in Seville, Zelestra will develop a 25 MW/100 MWh BESS alongside a 31 MWdc solar plant. At Valkyria in Castilla-La Mancha, a 90.45 MW/362 MWh BESS will complement 150 MWdc of solar. Both systems will provide four-hour storage.
The agreements expand the companies’ Spanish partnership to four solar-plus-storage projects, including existing projects at Trujillo and Pizarroso.
“By integrating storage with renewable generation, we can enhance system resilience, improve efficiency and accelerate the electrification and decarbonisation of the economy,” said Pedro Neves Ferreira, CEO of Global Energy Management at EDP.
Zelestra said hybridising operational solar plants can provide a faster route to grid flexibility, with land, generation and grid connections already in place.
