Eku Energy Commissions 250 MW Battery Storage Project in Canberra
Eku Energy has commissioned the Williamsdale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in the Australian Capital Territory, completing the ACT’s Big Canberra Battery project. At 250 MW / 500 MWh, the facility uses Tesla Megapack 2 XL batteries and can supply one-third of Canberra’s needs for up to two hours during peak demand.
The system will support the ACT electricity network and energy security in the ACT and NSW. Its applications are explored in PST articles The Evolution of Battery Energy Storage and Can Renewables & Battery Storage be More Competitive with Oil & Gas Plants?.
“We’re delighted to have commissioned the Williamsdale BESS, which is now ready to provide energy security and support the ACT’s electricity needs for the long term,” said Tom Best, Chief Operating Officer at Eku Energy. Eku identified Consolidated Power Projects as balance-of-plant contractor, Evoenergy as distribution network service provider, and AEMO as supporting grid-connection approval.
