Masdar and Endesa Build $28M Battery Storage Portfolio in Spain
Masdar and Endesa have begun building three battery energy storage systems (BESS) at solar plants in Spain. They will add 60.16 MW of power capacity and 120.34 MWh of storage. Investment totals approximately $28.3 million (€25.2 million).
Ardila is in Fregenal de la Sierra, Extremadura; La Vega I and II are in Teba, Andalusia. All systems will use lithium iron phosphate batteries and grid-forming inverters, providing synthetic inertia and near-instant responses to grid changes. “These projects will help integrate more clean power into the grid and strengthen the stability of the electricity system,” said Dr. Ibraheem Almansouri, acting COO of Masdar.
As battery storage becomes an increasingly important part of renewable energy infrastructure, its role in grid stability and flexibility is explored in Powering the Grid of Tomorrow and The Evolution of Battery Energy Storage. The projects are the first storage developments under the Masdar-Endesa partnership, established in 2024. Construction is expected to create 50 jobs, with all three projects scheduled to become operational by the end of 2027.
