NextGrid Commissions 60 MW Battery Storage System in Croatia
NextGrid Energy has commissioned BESS Šibenik, a 60 MW / 120 MWh standalone battery energy storage system (BESS) at the IMPOL-TLM industrial complex in Šibenik, Croatia. Connected to the 110 kV transmission grid, the facility uses Tesla Megapack XL units. Its 120 MWh capacity provides two hours at rated output.
Since September 2026, HOPS, Croatia’s transmission system operator, has contracted the battery’s full 60 MW capacity for automatic frequency restoration reserve (aFRR) services. The system can inject or absorb power to help balance electricity generation and consumption.
The project adds to the growing role of storage in grid operations, explored in PST's technical articles Powering the Grid of Tomorrow and BESS: From Backup to Backbone of Power System.
The approximately $67.2 million (€60 million) project was financed by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, Raiffeisen pension funds and IE-Energy, with support from the EU Modernisation Fund. NGEN provided technology and operational expertise.
