Sol Systems Starts $345M Solar Project on Historic Illinois Mine Site

23 Jan 2025
Sol Systems, a national clean energy leader, has begun construction on the Tilden Solar Project, a $345 million, 182-megawatt solar energy facility in Randolph County, Illinois. Set on a 1,050-acre site of a former subsurface mine, the project will generate enough electricity to power approximately 33,800 homes annually.

The development highlights Sol Systems' commitment to innovation by transforming a once carbon-intensive site into a renewable energy hub. Partnering with industry leaders such as ING, Churchill Stateside Group, Qcells, Nextracker, and McCarthy Building Companies, the project showcases the integration of U.S.-manufactured solar components and innovative construction solutions tailored for the site's unique geotechnical challenges.

The Tilden Solar Project is expected to provide millions in tax revenue, create approximately 300 construction jobs, and deliver 20 years of investments in local workforce development and environmental initiatives. Conservation efforts will include ecosystem restoration and pollinator habitat preservation.

"This project exemplifies the transformative potential of renewable energy development," said Yuri Horwitz, CEO of Sol Systems. "We're proud to invest in communities, protect ecosystems, and support domestic manufacturing."
