Duke Energy Plans 18.5 GW of New Solar in the Carolinas
Duke Energy plans to add 18.5 GW of solar capacity across North and South Carolina by 2041, according to its latest resource plan filed with South Carolina regulators.
The proposed portfolio also includes 14 GW of natural gas generation, 13 GW of energy storage and approximately 4.5 GW of new nuclear capacity.
Duke expects electricity demand in the Carolinas to continue rising, with winter peak demand projected to increase by more than 10 GW, or around 30%.
The utility said solar and battery projects are already progressing, while new gas capacity is expected to provide near-term reliability as demand grows. Duke is also seeking to extend the operating life of its existing nuclear fleet.
The South Carolina Public Service Commission is expected to review the plan, with a decision anticipated next year.
