Georgia Power Gets Approval for Seven Solar Projects

Georgia Power has received approval from the Georgia Public Service Commission (PSC) for seven new solar power purchase agreements (PPAs) totalling 1,137MW, expanding renewable generation options as electricity demand grows across the state.

The projects, procured through the CARES 2023 and CARES 2025 programmes, are located across Appling, Decatur, Jefferson, Sumter, Warren, Emanuel and Irwin counties. Commercial operation is expected to begin as early as 2029.

According to Wilson Mallard, director of renewable development at Georgia Power, the agreements will deliver “affordable and reliable energy at a fixed price” while adding more than 1,100MW of renewable resources to the utility’s generation portfolio.

The procurement is significant for power systems stakeholders as Georgia Power continues to diversify generation and expand access to carbon-free electricity. The utility said competitive procurement also provides flexibility as market conditions evolve.

The latest approvals follow 1,068MW of CARES 2023 projects approved in September 2025. Georgia Power’s CARES CIR programme can support up to a further 3,000MW of renewable projects.
