Linux Foundation launches OpenGrid for grid planning

The Linux Foundation has launched OpenGrid, an open-source initiative enabling utilities to exchange data and models across existing power grid planning platforms.

OpenGrid will establish shared data standards, application programming interfaces (APIs) and a central Data Hub containing validated datasets. This will allow different planning platforms to work together without replacing existing systems.

Its first application, the OpenGrid Translator, scheduled for release in 2027, will convert data and models between planning platforms.

“OpenGrid will bring the proven model of open collaboration to grid planning for faster and more reliable deployment,” said Jim Zemlin, Linux Foundation CEO.

The initiative aims to expand access to grid modeling capabilities worldwide by 2030, addressing fragmented planning systems as data centers, industrial loads and renewable generation increase pressure on electricity networks.

Backed by Breakthrough Energy GRIDS, Global Grid Catalyst, Connected Grid Initiative and Google.org, OpenGrid will work with technical partners to improve grid planning interoperability.
