Vattenfall Links Wind and Solar to One Grid Connection
Vattenfall is developing a 24.6 MW hybrid wind and solar park in Hommerdingen-Biesdorf, Germany, integrating both technologies through a shared grid connection.
The project combines four Enercon wind turbines totaling 17 MW with more than 12,000 solar modules providing 7.6 MWp.
The solar installation will use the wind farm’s connection to Westnetz’s distribution grid, operating as an additional generation unit rather than requiring separate infrastructure.
Philipp Heucke, Head of Onshore Wind Development at Vattenfall Germany, said: “The complementary generation profiles of wind and solar relieve the distribution grid compared to individual generation technologies.”
The configuration aims to improve grid capacity utilization, reduce connection costs and minimise overload risks.
The project follows Vattenfall’s hybrid generation model in the Netherlands. Commissioning is planned for autumn 2026, with no battery storage included initially. The approach highlights renewable energy integration within existing distribution networks.
