Sumitomo Opens UK’s First HVDC Subsea Cable Factory
UK – Sumitomo Electric has opened the UK's first high-voltage direct current (HVDC) subsea cable factory at Scotland's Port of Nigg, following a $467 million (£350 million) investment.
The facility will manufacture 525 kV XLPE HVDC transmission cables and subsea inter-array cables for offshore wind and electricity transmission projects.
Located within the Inverness and Cromarty Firth Green Freeport, the factory covers 58,000 square meters on a 15-hectare site.
The project received $32.7 million (£24.5 million) in Scottish Government funding and is expected to create over 200 skilled jobs, supporting more than 400 across the UK supply chain.
Osamu Inoue, Sumitomo Electric President, said the facility would support transmission infrastructure and renewable energy deployment.
The investment is linked to SSEN Transmission's Shetland 2 project and National Grid's Sea Link cable contract, expanding UK manufacturing capacity for HVDC transmission and subsea cable supply.
