Eversource, Dartmouth Selected for $47.7M Grid Project

Eversource and Dartmouth Engineering have been selected for U.S. Department of Energy award negotiations for a dynamic line rating (DLR) project aimed at increasing transmission capacity.

The DREAM initiative would deploy DLR technology across approximately 4,000 miles of Eversource’s transmission network in Connecticut, Massachusetts and New Hampshire. It will combine thermal field sensing, weather forecasting and digital models to provide operators with real-time data on transmission conditions and available capacity.

“Existing transmission lines can often carry more electricity than conventional ratings allow, but operators need reliable information about when that capacity is available and how to use it safely,” said Dartmouth professor Junbo Zhao.

The technology could increase use of existing infrastructure and, under certain conditions, reduce congestion or delay some new transmission construction. Pending successful negotiations and a final agreement, the project could receive approximately $47.7 million in DOE funding and begin in 2027.
