Vattenfall Expands Danish Offshore Wind Portfolio With 1.8GW
Swedish utility Vattenfall has won contracts to develop two offshore wind farms in Danish waters, with a combined potential capacity of 1.8GW.
The projects are Hesselø, located in the Kattegat Sea, and North Sea I Mid, off Denmark’s west coast. Hesselø could deliver around 800MW, while North Sea I Mid will have a minimum capacity of 1GW.
Both contracts run for 30 years, with an option to extend each by another 10 years. The projects have also secured grid connection rights, allowing development to progress once the remaining approvals are completed.
The two wind farms would increase Vattenfall’s total number of offshore wind installations in Danish waters to seven.
Vattenfall’s Head of Offshore Business Unit, David Flood, said the projects support the company’s plans to expand its European offshore wind portfolio and meet growing demand for clean electricity.
Denmark currently has 7.5GW of installed wind capacity and generates more wind power per capita than any other country, according to the report.
Vattenfall has not yet announced investment costs or a construction timeline. The next stages are expected to include environmental assessments, permitting, supply-chain agreements and preparation for final investment decisions.
